Recently, there is a particular variant of Windows worms that is affecting number computer users. According to anti-virus experts, the virus, which is known variously as Conficker, Kido or Downadup, targets the Windows operating system and it normally attacks through unsecured networks. Furthermore, it can also be spread with memory sticks, as users carry the worm from one machine to another.
According to Microsoft,
"...the worm searches for a Windows file called "services.exe", and then embeds itself as part of that code. From there, it is able to burrow deep into the operating system, even changing the System Registry, which stores settings and options for Windows, to trick the machine into running the infected program..."
Windows users are highly advised to ensure that their anti-virus software, operating system and firewall are up-to-date. In addition, the patch has been released by Microsoft to counter the worm attack, therefore users are also recommended to download the critical patch from Windows Update.
