Technosexual - A Sexuality Term?

Posted in

The first time I came across this word, "Technosexual", it caught my eyes immediately. English is such an amazing language, words can just be created by itself, all for no whatsoever reason. I have heard of "Heterosexual", "Homosexual" , Asexual and "Bi-sexual"; but definitely not "Technosexual". So, what is it?

First of all, I am not exactly where does the word originate from. It's just the same as the word "blog", how does this word "blog" comes about? It never exist in the dictionary, but nowadays, it has become a common word, such that it can be used even as a verb - "to blog" or "blogging". Anyway, let's not divert away from all these strange blooming of these words.

(more about Technosexuality...)

Technosexual is a term that is simply referred to someone who is socially withdrawn from the society when he or she spends too much time on the computer. No wonder this word does not exists in last last century, because computers do not exist at that time. With the growing computer literacy within children today, every child almost has a chance to come into contact with computers. Furthermore, most families own personal computers (PCs) at home; some even has more than 4 PCs per household - just like myself - two laptops and two desktops.

Internet surfing is probably one of the main reasons that got people addicted onto the PC. Online games such as Warcraft or Maple Story, are also partly to be blamed for people becoming technosexually active.

While many may argue that it is not a bad thing after all, since Internet is an evolutionary technology that people has to face with, especially with the enormous amount of information that can be searched and researched upon, just by the click of a mouse. It allows students to obtain information more readily off the net; it allows businessmen to check information instantly in real-time, particularly those heavily involved in stock markets; furthermore, it offers convenient services to customers, such as online banking and transactions, e.g. Paypal.

On the other hand, being techosexually active may also results in a child being socially withdrawn from his or her friends. Children no longer hang out to play, but instead sit in front of the computer and stare at the monitor screen for hours. In the long term, it may result in health problems, such as poor eye sights for staring at the screen for long hours, backache due to poor sitting posture, and possibly dehydration when one is actively-hyper engaged in the computer program, e.g. games or work. One may forget to drink water to replenish himself.

Overall, though I do not see one being technosexual as a bad thing, but one has to moderately understand where the limit lies. It is vital to take some short exercises every half an hour, just to relax the body after sitting for a long time. In generally, one cannot live without the computer, in today's modern society, but neither can one be addicted into it.

Have a life, don't sell your soul!
