IT Cost-Saving Measures for SME and LE Enterprises

Posted in

The recent economy crisis has plunged several countries into worldwide global recession. Those that are yet to be in the state of recession will find themselves to be into one soon. Hence, how does this affect the businesses and enterprises over the world?

Collapse of the 150-year-old Lehman Brothers is an example illustrating that there is no such thing as job stability, business security, etc. In this millennium, it is truly the survival of the fittest - the company that is capable of  the highest turnover in the shortest period of time will ride the tide. This does not necessarily appeal to the large enterprise (LE) market segment, but also to Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) businesses. As a C-level personnel, particularly a CIO, CTO or Vice-President of IT, what should be your next step to uphold the stability of the company.

Bot Detector Behind Google Search Engine

Posted in

How often do you experience bot detector being scanned on you? I have my share of experience here, being sniffed out by Google, as though I am a bot (click on screen-shot above).

My initial reaction was, where does this page comes about? What I did was to type "http://www.google.com" on to the address bar in Google Chrome and this page pops-up.

This is the first time I have seen such a thing, ever since using Google search engine for so many years, since it was publicly-launched 10 years ago.

Mollom - Spam Comments Exterminator

Just about two weeks ago, we have upgraded our site to the latest Drupal engine. After doing so, we acknowledged that there will be a lot of spam issues, as that have been encountered when the site was running on version 4.7.x version. During then, there was a particular contributed Drupal module, "spam", which worked miraculously in identifying spam comments. Unfortunately, this module is not supported in version 6.x, which prompted us to lookout for an alternative solution.

There was none that suits our needs from the Drupal module repository until we saw this - Mollom.

24-hour Battery Life HP Notebook - EliteBook 6930p

Posted in

After Dell announced their Latitude series of E6400 notebook that is capable of running on a battery for 19 hours, HP made a claim that they have something that can superbly overhaul that achievement! The new EliteBook 6930p is said to be capable of delivering up to 24 hours of battery runtime, with the support of an optional ultra-capacity battery.

Ted Clark, Senior Vice President and Geeneral Manager of Notebook Global Business Unit, HP said,

"...All-day computing has been the holy grail of notebook computing. With the HP EliteBook 6930p, customers no longer have to worry about their notebook battery running out before their work day is over..."

What made this notebook run so long is very due to its specification, such as the Intel 80GB Solid-State Drive (SSD) and the 14.1-inch mercury-free Illumi-Lite Light-Emitting Diode (LED) display. Both hardware components have significantly reduces the overall energy consumption on the battery lifespan. Believe it or not, the system is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, something that you might not be expected for a long battery lifespan laptop.
