GZ - Testing Compressed Files .tar.gz and .gz Using Command Line

Compression Using Command Line

It has been quite some time since I introduced a tutorial on using LInux (UNIX) command line. The last one that I did on Tar.gz compression drew quite a substantial interest from readers. Hopefully, this will do so likewise.

This time, I will introduce using command line to Test all the files within the compressed file, using command line only. There are 2 significant uses: first, it consume lesser memory, and secondly, it is much efficient and quicker if you need to test multiple compressed files.

The technological advances of computing power and speeds today has led to the higher demand in applications, and not just hardware alone. Although it is not fully matured, 64-bit technology is already powering some of the home systems.

PuTTY 64bit

Putty Logo

PuTTY is a SSH and telnet client, developed originally by Simon Tatham for the Windows platform. Furthermore, it is an open source software that is available with source code.

With the latest development of running 64-bit computing, such as Linux and Windows 7, PuTTY has not developed any release for 64-bit.

However, Spunk has taken it to the next level to come up with a 64-bit release, based on the 0.60 version. I have personally tested it and is pretty impressed with the usage.

Drupal Logo

At Neohide, we have just upgraded to the next version of Drupal 6.17, a maintenance release fixing issues reported through the bug tracking system. Although it was reported that there was no security concern, upgrading to this latest version is still recommended.

Some of the changes include improvements of session cookie handling, better processing of big XML-RPC payloads, improved PostgreSQL compatibility, better PHP 5.3 and PHP 4 compatibility, improved Japanese support in search module, better browser compatibility of CSS and JS aggregation and improved logging for login failures.

Interested users can download Drupal 6.17 version here.

A rather common error arises when users upgrade from an earlier version of phpBB. Below is an example:

Field 'forum_last_post_subject' doesn't have a default value [1364]

After browsing through the forums trying to find an answer, it almost seems so impossible. Nevertheless, I did a couple of research myself and managed to find figure out a solution for it, which is SO simple!

phpBB SQL Error - 'phpbb_sessions' is marked as crashed and should be repaired

phpBB Logo

Recently, my phpBB forum encountered a SQL error, shown below:

'phpbb_sessions' is marked as crashed and should be repaired [145]

The first thing that I did was to access phpMyAdmin to try an repair the table with the SQL command:

REPAIR TABLE 'phpbb_sessions'

Unfortunately, that does not work. I did some research online and finally, I managed to resolve the issue. It takes a bit of tweaking nonetheless, but it's a fairly simple procedure.

10 Ways to Boost Netbook Performance

Netbooks

Over the past 12 months, Netbook sales has rocketed in the market, as more users are now looking out for cheaper alternatives to laptops to supplement their computing requirements. According to market research, about 20% of the 30 million laptops shipped worldwide were netbooks during the first quarter of 2009, as compared to just over 3% during the same period last year. Without the netbooks, the laptop market would have plummeted by 19%, said John Jacobs, director of notebook market research at Display Search.

Compared to laptops, netbooks still use the slower Intel Atom processors in their system, and they do not come with discrete graphics cards or optical drives. However, that does not mean you could not boost the performance of your netbook to the level of that of your laptops. Below are some fixes that you could easily do to increase performance.
