Back when cell phones first became popular they were used for two things: making and receiving phone calls… and nothing else. Except maybe for playing the game Snake – that was pretty big for a while too. They were big and bulky and not all that reliable, and it took a while for people to catch on to the idea that you could carry around a phone with you and constantly stay in touch with others. Once people did catch on to the idea that you can stay in touch parents ate it up, making it the ultimate way for them to somewhat keep tabs on their children, among other benefits.

Mobile users should be very familiar with this WhatsApp Messenger application. Exist as a cross-platform mobile messaging app, it allows users to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS, and it is also vailable for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Nokia.

Utilising only the Internet data plan, it further allows you to use for email and web browsing at no cost to message, whilst staying in touch with your friends.

Normally, this app is charged at US$0.99 for iPhone users. Today (15th October 2011), when I noticed that it is given out as "FREE", perhaps for a one-day promotional offer. Well, iPhone users should access iTunes to download it as soon as possible, or install it via your iPhone AppStore.

Viber - Free Calls

Most of us have heard about Skype; however, how of many you knew about Viber? This application, currently meant only for iPhone, is developed by Viber Media Inc. to allow free calls through WiFi and 3G networks.

What makes this so different from other VoIP applications is that, it has the capabilitiy to run through your iPhone Contacts and add them to Viber list, should anyone from your Contact list is also using Viber. In other words, it automatically shows you who else in your Contacts are using Viber and you can call them using Viber for free (unlike Skype, you need to tell your contacts to log on to the application).
