Hard disk drives are just like human beings, they need regular check-up to ensure efficient operations and avoid possible hard disk failures. Furthermore it is very important to ensure data integrity in the drive, by identifying the possible of drive failure earlier.
In Windows environment, there are tools readily available to help you check your hard disk drive.
(proceed to find out how to maintenance a good hard disk checkup...)
Instructions for Hard Disk Drive Checkup:
- Inside My Computer folder, right-click on the hard disk drive that you want to perform a check-up, for example C:\ Drive, and then click on "Properties".
- Select "Properties" tab and click on the "Tools" button.
- Upon accessing, the following dialog box will pop-up (see below). Click on the "Start" button to proceed.
- The system will start checking your hard disk drive for errors and defects.

Note that, depending on the capacity of your hard disk drive and the amount of data that your drive contains, the time taken to completion will differ from one drive to another.
Secondly, it is also important to note that, during this period of maintenance process, do not run any applications, as that will interrupt the check-up of the hard disk drive. Always plan to give about 30 minutes to 1 hour at least not to use the system and allow the system to complete the maintenance checkup.
