Domain names are important in the Internet world, when trying to identify a site uniquely from everyone else's. While almost all top level domain names are to be paid for, such as *.com, *.net, *.org, some are willing to provide them for free over a short period of time.
If that is not sufficient, there are second-level domain names which you can always count on, for instance, *.neohide.com. Here is a list of sites that provide free domain names:
- UNI.CC - The best so far, providing you with a URL Forwarding, DNS management support and single page creation. A link back to the site is needed if you choose to use DNS management service with UNI.CC
- FreeDNS Afraid - Offers a huge list of second level domain names. Most of them are voluntarily shared by top-level domain name owners.
- Sitelutions DNS Services - Free Domain Name Service, providing both static and dynamic DNS services. Features include International Redundancy, Web-based control for DNS and redirection, Instant Dynamic update and low TTL settings.
- CO.NR - Provides URL forwarding. DNS Management will come at a price.
- AlpenNIC - German-based domain site.
- Dynu - Dynamic URL offering second-leve domain name.
- No-IP - Lots of functions, but quite confusing. Paid and free services available.
- Smartdots - It is free, no ads, URL forwarding, Path forwarding, URL Cloaking, Detailed Access Statistics, email address, automatic submission to over 250 search engines, support for personal favicon and access protection.
