Climate Savers Computing Initiative - Computers Going Green

Posted in

The Climate Savers Computing Initiative is an initiative organised by Internet search leader Google and computer chip-maker Intel to increase the energy efficiency of computing gear over the next four years.

Driven to meet the requirement of US Environmental Protection's Energy Star standard of 80 percent efficiency, the Climate Savers' initiative requires participating companies to buy corporate computers and servers that meet these targets and follow guidelines to maximise energy efficiency of their equipment.

(check out the Climate Savers Computing Initiative ...)

The plan of this initiative is to halve the amount of electricity computing and servers consumption by 2010 using the existing power-saving technologies available.

"... The initiative is expected to save more than US$5.5 billion in electricity costs by 2010 and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change by 54 million tonnes annually - an amount equal to eliminating 11 million cars or 20 large coal-fired power plants each year...

With two major players leading the drive, the initiative is also backed by several large companies, e.g. Hewlett Packard (HP), Hitachi, International Business Machine (IBM), Microsoft, Yahoo, Sun Microsystems and Dell.

In fact, Dell has recently announced that they aim to become the greenest technology company on earth!
