WordPress 2.6.1 Now Released

SoftSift - Fri, 2008-08-15 14:27

WordPress 2.6.1 was released just a couple of minutes ago. In the past, I would always mention “… users are advised to upgrade to the latest version…“, well not this time. According to Ryan, users need not upgrade to the latest version of 2.6.1 if version 2.6 is working fine for you.

The release of this sub-version is simply to continue the trend of releasing a maintenance release shortly after a major release, to get fixes for the bugs that might be present in the official release.

Nonetheless, WordPress 2.6.1 offers several improvements for international users, such as styling for admin for right-to-left languages and fixing mysterious gettext bug. In addition, there is also a fix for a performance bug in the admin panel where those users with several plugins might experience slowness on page loads.

Firefox Download Day - Get Mozilla Firefox 3

SoftSift - Wed, 2008-06-18 02:44

It has been announced during my previous post that Mozilla Firefox 3 will be launched today, and so it did! Right now, there are thousands of downloads going on since the news have gone public. It was phenomenologically huge traffic such that the traffic to Firefox home page was rather sluggish.

Nonetheless, this is also an on-going campaign to hit the target of achieving the largest volume of downloads within a 24 hours timeframe. Hence, good luck, Mozilla. Meanwhile, if you do support Mozilla Firefox 3, download it today.

SoftSift - Fri, 2008-06-13 05:28

The news is out, Mozilla has revealed that Firefox 3, the next generation of Mozilla Firefox browser, will be released next Tuesday, June 17th, 2008.

Although some developers and testers have already got their hands on the latest applications, it is still under pre-release milestone stage; that is, it is not yet a production release. By next Tuesday, the full version will be revealed, with several fixes.

Firefox 3 is a result of more than 34 months of active development from thousands of contributions from the community. Remember, the date is June 17, 2008 - the day when Mozilla also attempts to break the world’s record of the highest number of downloads in a single day.

Hacked Site is very Costly

SoftSift - Sun, 2008-06-08 07:11

Just about two weeks ago, SoftSift was under seige by a hacker, called Mhrfl. It is definitely not something that is really proud to talk about, as it simply illustrate the vulnerability of site being insecure.

Luckily, the hack was discovered within 12 hours and the site was restored back to its original status. The full detail of what happened is covered by Al in SelfMadeMinds.

Honestly, it was completely a webmaster’s nightmare as it takes a lot of trouble to restore the website to its original state. One thing that all of us can learn from this situation is, always back-up your data, as frequent as possible. Another thing is, it always pay to get your site secured professionally, especially if you are running a huge traffic.

Why I highlighted that hacked site is very costly, is simply because there was a significant drop in the number of inbound traffic, particularly organic traffic from search engines; ever since the hack took place. Right now, I am unable to show you the screenshot, but when I manage to get the site sorted out, you will see the evidence that it is not cheap when your site is down.

For webmasters, or site owners, traffic simply means revenue.
