In the cyber-world, there are so many communication going on and it is without a doubt that confidential information are also being communicated across the World Wide Web (WWW).

Despite some companies may have provided some forms of security to ensure communication is secured, end users should also take some responsibility to safeguard their own data. Here are 5 basic steps to stay safe online:

Any interactions on the Internet should be done with the same approach as they would be doing so offline. Below are some guidelines to better secured surfing, but it is ultimately the knowledge of the WWW that needs to be further educated.

  1. Be cautious about what you post
    Think before sharing thoughts, photos and videos that are very personal about yourself online. Sometimes these can be used against you.
  2. Setting profiles to private on Social Networking Sites
    Social networking site is the greatest architect as well as the most dangerous place. Make sure you keep your profile private and only invite those who you know to join your network.
  3. Use nicknames instead
    Using real names on the Internet can allow almost the world to reach you, especially with the search engines we have today. Use nicknames instead, to avoid divulging your private information.
  4. Be respectful
    Avoid posting anything that is libelous lewd, racist or in violation of site's or service's terms of service. If it is considered illegal, you could lend yourself into hot soup.
  5. Use of legal file-sharing services
    If files are being shared illegally, whether if it's intentionally or not, you could be held responsible for copyright infringement. Make sure you have the proper settings for the service to ensure that your computer and its contents are not vulnerable to hackers, viruses, spams or spywares.
